Why Registering Your Business Matters
Operating an unregistered business in Tanzania puts you at a disadvantage: you cannot open a business bank account, apply for government tenders, sign formal contracts, or scale your operations credibly. BRELA registration is the foundation of a legitimate business.
What Is BRELA?
BRELA stands for the Business Registrations and Licensing Agency. It is the government body responsible for registering companies, businesses, and intellectual property in Tanzania. Most registrations can now be done online through the BRELA portal at www.brela.go.tz.
Types of Business Structures
Sole Proprietorship (Business Name)
The simplest structure — one owner, unlimited personal liability. Suitable for small individual businesses. Cost: approximately 25,000 TZS. Processing time: 3-7 days.
Partnership
Two or more people share ownership and liability. Suitable for small professional practices and family businesses. Cost: approximately 50,000 TZS.
Limited Liability Company (LLC)
The most popular structure for medium and large businesses. Owners (shareholders) are protected from personal liability beyond their investment. This is what most formal businesses register as. Cost: 100,000–300,000 TZS depending on capital.
Step-by-Step Registration Process
Step 1: Reserve a Business Name
Log in to the BRELA portal, search for your desired business name, and reserve it. The name must be unique and cannot be identical or too similar to existing registered names. Cost: 10,000 TZS. Valid for 30 days.
Step 2: Prepare Required Documents
For a Limited Company, you will need:
- Memorandum and Articles of Association (can be downloaded from BRELA portal)
- National IDs or passports of all directors and shareholders
- Passport-size photos of directors
- Physical address of the business (with GPS coordinates or Plot/House number)
- Statement of nominal capital
Step 3: Submit Application Online
Fill in the company registration form on the BRELA portal. Upload all required documents. Pay the registration fee via mobile money or bank transfer.
Step 4: Wait for Approval
BRELA processes most applications within 3–14 working days. You will receive email notifications on the status of your application.
Step 5: Receive Your Certificate
Once approved, download your Certificate of Incorporation from the BRELA portal. This is your official business registration document.
After Registration
After receiving your BRELA certificate, your next steps are:
- Register with TRA (Tanzania Revenue Authority) for a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN)
- Open a business bank account
- Register for VAT if your annual turnover exceeds 200 million TZS
- Obtain any sector-specific licenses required for your industry
